Regarded as one of the greatest actors of Indian cinema, he is known not only for work in Hindi films but for also being featured in a number of English-language international films, particularly films produced by Merchant Ivory. A member of the Kapoor family, he received numerous accolades over his five-decade-long career, including four National Film Awards and two Filmfare Awards. In 2011, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian award, by the Government of India.
