After winning the Miss World 1994 pageant, she made her acting debut in the political drama *Iruvar* (1997) and entered Hindi cinema that same year with *...Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya*. Her subsequent releases included *Jeans* (1998) and *Aa Ab Laut Chalen* (1999). For her performance in the musical *Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam* (1999), Rai won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. She followed this with *Taal* (1999), *Kandukondain Kandukondain* (2000), and *Mohabbatein* (2000). She earned a second Filmfare Award for Best Actress for the period drama *Devdas* (2002). Her releases during this decade included the Bengali feature *Chokher Bali* (2003), *Raincoat* (2004), *Dhoom 2* (2006), *Guru* (2007), *Jodhaa Akbar* (2008), *Enthiran* (2010), and *Guzaarish* (2010). She also appeared in English-language productions, including *Bride & Prejudice* (2004) and *The Pink Panther 2* (2009). Following a hiatus, Rai returned to cinema with *Jazbaa* (2015), the biographical drama *Sarbjit* (2016), and *Ae Dil Hai Mushkil* (2016). She later starred in the historical drama *Ponniyin Selvan: I* (2022) and its sequel *Ponniyin Selvan: II* (2023).
