She is the daughter of actors Kamal Haasan and Sarika Thakur. After working as a child playback singer and making a brief appearance in *Hey Ram* (2000), she made her adult acting debut in the Hindi action thriller *Luck* (2009). She appeared in *Anaganaga O Dheerudu* (2011) and *7 Aum Arivu* (2011), winning the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut – South. Her other film roles include *Gabbar Singh* (2012), *3* (2012), *Balupu* (2013), *Yevadu* (2014), *Race Gurram* (2014), *Srimanthudu* (2015), *Premam* (2016), *Krack* (2021), *Waltair Veerayya* (2023), *Veera Simha Reddy* (2023), *Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire* (2023), and *Coolie* (2025). She also appeared in the Hindi films *D-Day* (2013) and *Welcome Back* (2015), as well as the American action drama series *Treadstone* (2019). She composed the soundtrack for *Unnaipol Oruvan* (2009) and fronted the alternative rock band The Extramentals. She has received two Filmfare Awards South, including Best Actress – Telugu for *Race Gurram*, and multiple South Indian International Movie Awards (SIIMA) for acting and playback singing.
