He is the son of actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao. After appearing as a child artist, he made his debut as a leading actor with *Vikram* (1986). He later appeared in Mani Ratnam's romantic tragedy *Geethanjali* (1989) and Ram Gopal Varma's crime drama *Siva* (1989). His other films include *Hello Brother* (1994), *Ninne Pelladata* (1996), *Annamayya* (1997), *Santosham* (2002), *Manmadhudu* (2002), *Mass* (2004), *Sri Ramadasu* (2006), *Manam* (2014), *Oopiri* (2016), and *Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva* (2022). As an actor and producer with Annapurna Studios, he has received two National Film Awards, including a Special Mention for *Annamayya* and Best Feature Film in Telugu for *Ninne Pelladata*, nine Nandi Awards, and three Filmfare Awards South. He has hosted several seasons of the reality show *Bigg Boss Telugu* and co-founded the Blue Cross of Hyderabad.
