Trained in Kathak, she appeared in the music video "Thirakti Kyun Hawa" by Renu Nathan before beginning her acting career. Saran made her acting debut in the Telugu romantic drama *Ishtam* (2001), followed by roles in *Santosham* (2002) and *Nuvve Nuvve* (2002). Her subsequent films include V. V. Vinayak's *Tagore* (2003), *Nenunnanu* (2004), S. S. Rajamouli's action film *Chatrapathi* (2005), and Shankar's Tamil film *Sivaji: The Boss* (2007). She made her Hindi leading debut in Mohit Suri's crime drama *Awarapan* (2007) and appeared in Susi Ganesan's superhero film *Kanthaswamy* (2009). Her English-language credits include James Dodson's *The Other End of the Line* (2008) and Deepa Mehta's adaptation of Salman Rushdie's *Midnight's Children* (2012). She also appeared in Vikram K. Kumar's *Manam* (2014) and Krish Jagarlamudi's historical film *Gautamiputra Satakarni* (2017). She portrayed Nandini Salgaonkar in Nishikant Kamat's crime thriller *Drishyam* (2015) and its sequel *Drishyam 2* (2022), both opposite Ajay Devgn. She played Sarojini in S. S. Rajamouli's *RRR* (2022), appeared in the multilingual period action film *Kabzaa* (2023), and played Mandira Mathur in Mihir Desai's drama series *Showtime* (2024). Her later credits include Karthik Ghattamaneni's Telugu fantasy adventure *Mirai* (2025), Karthik Subbaraj's *Retro* (2025), and the space drama series *Space Gen: Chandrayaan* (2026).
